Fort Davis National Historic Site – Fort Davis, TX
We recently visited Fort Davis NHS in Fort Davis, Texas. Fort Davis was a key post for defense in West Texas and is an example of a frontier military post.
Location: Fort Davis is located on Hwy 118 in Fort Davis, Texas, about 40 miles south of exit 209 off of I-10.
Admission Fee: Fort Davis NHS has three options for admission fees; $10 per person, $20 per vehicle and $15 per motorcycle. Or, if you have a National Park Pass – as we do, your admission is free. You can purchase your annual National Park Pass at most National Parks or visit https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm
What You’ll See: Fort Davis NHS is a self-guided walking tour on a gravel path. The path is a flat gravel path and is very easy to walk. There is not much shade, be prepared with water and sunscreen. You’ll see remnants of former out-buildings and several renovated buildings. There is a hiking trail from the Fort to Davis Mountains State Park. (See our post about Davis Mountains State Park) The Fort sits below the high cliffs of the Davis Mountains. The Visitors Center houses a small museum explaining the history of the Fort and its occupants. There is also a short nature trail along the back hillside near the Officers Quarters.
Conclusion: We enjoyed our visit. It was very informative and gave me a little more understanding of how West Texas was settled. We spent about two and half hours touring the grounds. Have you visited Fort Davis NHS? Tell us about your visit!
