Part 2

Continuing to sample all the deliciousness in the Far West Texas area of Fort Davis, Marfa and Alpine. For a small region, there is a lot of local spots to fill your belly.  Without further ado, here is part 2 of great food spots in West Texas.

La Casita – Alpine, Texas

Almost hidden away on the back side of the Sul Ross football stadium is delicious La Casita. Taco and green enchiladas plate was fantastic. Chips and salsa were served while we waited for our food. Friendly staff and excellent food.

Tacos and Burritos

Cow Dog – Alpine, Texas

This food truck sits next to Plaine Coffe & Laundry in Alpine. Unique and tasty foot long hot dog creations.  Our favorites were the Green Chili Cow Dog and the El Pastor.  Pictured are the El Pastor and the Pizza Dog (which was also very good)

Tri-La-Bite – Alpine, Texas

Across the street from Sonic Drive-In in Alpine is another food truck. We fell in love with the Jalapeno burger and the Green Chili Burger.  Don’t forget to sign the truck – look for my own ‘Andy Morgan Photography’ inscribed on the back 🙂

Texas Cowboy Outfitters – Fort Davis, Texas

Glen Moreland Texas Cowboy Outfitters is an Award Winning Chuck-Wagon.  I had the privilege of tasting their amazing food at the annual Cookout and Auction hosted by the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute. The annual event is held in mid-August. Beef brisket and Peach Cobbler that will make you weak in the knees. Absolutely fabulous food during a fun evening raising funds for the nature center.

If you wish to attend this event, visit www.cdri.org for more 2019 date & time along with ticket information.

Blue Bell Ice Cream

Texans already know they have one of the best brands of ice cream around. I had never had Blue Bell before spending time in Texas.  After two summers testing the variety of flavors, I settled on Key Lime Mango Tart and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie Dough.  Sold in big half gallon size, these tubs almost lasted a 2 days.

Mando’s – Marfa, Texas

Mando’s in Marfa has been filling bellies of locals and visitors for decades. We stopped for breakfast. I love a big breakfast and Mondo’s portions did not disappoint.

Cueva De Leon – Fort Davis, Texas

In a region with several options for delicious Mexican food, Cueva De Leon makes this list for their buffet.  Each day of the week the buffet has a different feature. On this particular Sunday, fried chicken and chili rellano were on the menu. Fried chicken was decent, Chili Rellanos were excellent!

Magoos – Alpine, Texas

I missed out on Magoos my first summer spent in the region. Every time I drove by, the parking lot was completely full.  Not wanting to wait to be served, I chose to go to another spot.  This summer I discovered why it was always full. After multiple visits for breakfast and lunch, I never had anything that disappointed. Enchiladas, chili verde burritos, heavous rancheros, fajitas….it didn’t matter what I ordered, it was all a delight.
