Get ready to smile with this lively photograph, “The Lead Performer,” captured at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, Florida. I had spent some time watching this particular Great Blue Heron, who seemed to be putting on a show, joyfully jumping and frolicking as if dancing through the shallows. My camera was ready as he then approached a perfect line of pristine Snowy Egrets. I waited, holding my breath in anticipation for him to join their ranks. And then, he did it! He dramatically threw his magnificent wings out, as if announcing his arrival as the lead performer, with the elegant Snowys perfectly lined up as his backup dancers.
