Milky Way and Mitre Peak – I went to the opposite side of the 6000′ peak to catch the Milky Way overhead. I drove out a dirt road I had never been on before. It seemed to narrow the further I drove. At one point I thought an old torn shirt in the road was a rattlesnake. I also had to wait for a dozen cows to decide the pasture was nicer than a road. The result was this wonderful angle of the peak rising above the desert below. Mars joined the star party. Also, I caught a few meteors in the shot. Only one was picked up brightly. I spotted a couple more when I zoomed way in on the image file. This is a one-shot capture. I used a flashlight to help lighten the foreground. I think this might be one of my favorite milky way shots I’ve captured.
‘Mitre Magic’ has quickly become one of my most popular images. This view of Mitre Peak is taken near the Girl Scout Camp which sits near its base. The image has been used for notecards as gifts for some of the campers. In addition, a print of this image was donated to the Mitre Peak Girl Scout Camp for their fundraiser in 2018 and 2022. Mitre Magic was the cover photo of the winter 2020-2021 Cenizo Journal magazine.
